NFL Week 1: Colts are 1-0 for the first time since 2013

Sunday’s game is a game that will go down in Colts’ history as one of the most historic, shocking, and meaningful wins. The streak is finally over; the Colts are 1-0 for the first time since 2013! I have never been happier that my score prediction was so far off.

From kickoff, the Colts played with an edge. Finishing 22 of 29 for 272 passing yards, one passing score, and two rushing touchdowns, Daniel Jones' debut as QB1 could not have gone any better. On top of that, the Colts also scored on all seven offensive possessions.

Rookie tight end Tyler Warren proved himself in his first NFL game with seven catches for 76 yards. Michael Pittman Jr. wasn't far behind him, with 80 receiving yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Taylor also added 71 yards, keeping the Dolphins defense on their feet.

On the flip side, new defense coordinator Lou Anarumo crafted mastermind plans. The Colts were able to force three early turnovers: two interceptions by Camryn Bynum and Laiatu Latu, and a fumble recovery by Kenny Moore II. Miami never recovered.

Keys to the Game: Preview vs Execution

  1. Smart QB play from Daniel Jones: Jones was able to deliver precisely what the Colts needed to carry them to a win.

  1. Shutting down Tyreek Hill: Howard’s coverage forced the Dolphins to pivot, taking away their deadliest weapon.

  1. Offensive Timing vs Dolphins Defense: The Colts made quick strikes, crisp routes, and disciplined execution that was enough to keep Miami’s defense under their control.

On top of their success, what made this win extra sentimental was the team dedicating this win and the upcoming season to Jim Irsay, the late owner of the Indianapolis Colts. The team and community mourned his death but honored him yesterday in one of the most special ways. A quote from Shane Steichen reads, “He’s not with us physically, but he’s in this locker room spiritually. He’s watching down on us”. Irsay had such an impact on players’ experiences and gave so much to Indianapolis and the Colts community. Fans will always remember this Win for Jim.

All in all, this was a Colts fan’s best day ever, and the outcome was more than anyone could have imagined. This win gave the fan base a new wave of confidence, and some are even calling a Colts Super Bowl this early. While it is important not to get too ahead of ourselves, I think Colts fans everywhere deserve to bask in the glory of this win. It’s been a loooooong time coming, and it feels like a new era has finally begun.
