Lions vs. Bears: Ben Johnson’s Homecoming Showdown
The Detroit Lions (0-1) enter Week 2, eager and ready to rebound from a 27-13 loss in Green Bay. The only thing that stands in their way is a Chicago Bears team led by a man who knows Detroit inside and out—former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
It’s the first meeting with Johnson since he left Detroit to take on the Bears’ top job, and the reunion comes just one week after both teams suffered frustrating opening losses.
Johnson knows Detroit’s offensive DNA because he helped create it. He also knows the strengths and habits of Detroit’s core as well as anyone. However, the Lions have introduced new layers under fresh coordinators, and they’re determined to stay unpredictable to prove they can thrive beyond their former strategist’s playbook.
What Detroit Must Do To Win
1.) Keep Caleb Williams Contained - Chicago’s rookie quarterback posted 268 total yards and two touchdowns in his debut. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard must maintain pocket discipline and prevent Williams from extending drives with improvised runs.
2.) Lean on Amon-Ra St. Brown- Detroit’s All-Pro slot receiver is primed for a favorable matchup after a quiet opener. With Bears nickel defenders Kyler Gordon and Josh Blackwell questionable, veteran corner Nick McCloud could be forced into extended duty. This could be the perfect opportunity for Lions quarterback Jared Goff to feed St. Brown early and often.
3.) Control the Interior Line- Detroit’s reshuffled interior allowed 19 pressures and managed just 44 rushing yards against Green Bay. Rookies Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge, alongside veteran Graham Glasgow, will need to communicate cleanly to spring Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, giving Goff time to attack downfield.
Prediction
Johnson’s insider knowledge adds intrigue, but the combination of Ford Field noise and Detroit’s overall talent should determine the outcome. Expect St. Brown to rack up catches, Gibbs to ignite the ground game, and Aidan Hutchinson to generate key pressure in the fourth quarter.
Final Score: Lions 27, Bears 20
Detroit claims its first win of the season and reminds its former coordinator that the roar in Motown remains the loudest sound in the NFC North.
