Ravens Show Run Game & Special Teams Spark in Preseason Win Over Colts
Baltimore Ravens defeat Indianapolis Colts - 2025 Preseason Week 1
The Baltimore Ravens kicked off their 2025 preseason with a 24-16 win over the Indianapolis Colts at M&T Bank Stadium. They relied heavily on their run game and special teams for the victory. The game unfolded as we expected in our Ravens vs Colts Preseason Week 1 Preview, where we discussed Baltimore’s young talent and key position battles.
Third-year running back Keaton Mitchell looked fully recovered from injury and gave the offense a boost. He finished with 68 yards on nine carries, including a 22-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. His speed and vision stood out, showing why the Ravens view him as a valuable alternative behind their starters (Pro Football Reference).
Rookie wide receiver LaJohntay Wester provided one of the highlights of the night by returning an 87-yard punt for a touchdown in the first quarter. This return set the tone for the Ravens’ special teams unit, which tackled coverage well and was aggressive in blocking lanes (Next Gen Stats). With Lamar Jackson sitting out, Baltimore’s passing attack faltered. Cooper Rush and Devin Leary managed only 49 passing yards on 5-of-16 passing, with each throwing one interception (StatMuse). The Ravens depended heavily on the run game and special teams to create offense, raising concerns about depth at quarterback as they head into Week 2.
Linebacker Jay Higgins IV made a standout defensive play in the fourth quarter with an interception that led to Tyler Loop’s 52-yard field goal, sealing the game. Overall, the Ravens forced two turnovers and limited the Colts to under 100 rushing yards (PFF). Indianapolis also had starting quarterback Anthony Richardson leave early due to a finger injury, which prompted backup Daniel Jones to step in. Jones led two scoring drives, but both ended in field goals as Baltimore’s defense held strong in the red zone (Colts.com).
The Ravens will travel to Dallas next weekend to face the Cowboys in their second preseason game. Fans can expect more playing time for starters and continued evaluation of the backup quarterback competition and return game depth.
Baltimore’s preseason is off to a good start, and if Week 1 is any indication, their run game and special teams could be key factors when the regular season begins.
