Week 9 Recap: 49ers Beat the Giants in High-Scoring Affair

In a Sunday morning matchup, the San Francisco 49ers grab a double-digit win over the New York Giants. The 49ers were coming off a loss to the NFL’s leading defense, the Houston Texans. The New York Giants came off a Week 8 loss to a division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, after beating them earlier in the season.

Rookie Quarterback Jaxon Dart started in his sixth straight game for the Giants in Week 9. On the other side of the field, the 49ers continued their offensive success with a top-10 total offense and top-5 passing offense, according to Fox Sports.

On their first drive of the game, New York was able to secure a touchdown with a pass from Dart to tight end Theo Johnson. The 49ers responded with a passing touchdown of their own, from quarterback Mac Jones to running back Christian McCaffrey. Jones threw another touchdown pass to wide receiver Jauan Jennings at the beginning of the second quarter.

For the rest of the half, both teams traded scoreless possessions except for one made field goal by 49ers kicker Eddy Pineiro. However, scoring resumed on the first drive of the second half with another field goal from Pineiro. New York responded with a field goal by kicker Graham Gano.

The scoring picked up yet again in the fourth quarter. Both teams scored touchdowns on every possession during the game’s final quarter. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. started with an 18-yard rushing touchdown for San Francisco. Dart followed up with another rushing touchdown for the Giants. McCaffery scored again with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. New York scored the last points of the game with a deep pass from Dart to wide receiver Gunner Olszewski to put the final score at 34-24.

Despite the loss, Dart arguably played his best game, scoring a rushing touchdown and throwing two passing touchdowns. According to Pro Football Reference, he has his highest QBR of the season.

In Week 9, Jones also had his highest QBR of the season as he filled in for San Francisco’s starting quarterback, Brock Purdy. Purdy is still listed as questionable for the 49ers’ upcoming Week 10 matchup, so Jones is likely to continue leading the offense. San Francisco will be back at home in Santa Clara to face a familiar foe, the Los Angeles Rams. The division rivals will kick off at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday at 1:25 p.m.
