Why Rookie RB Cam Skattebo Provides Physicality and Identity
East Rutherford, NJ- Many football fans were introduced to former Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo during last year's College Football Playoff against Texas, where the versatile back rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to hauling in 8 receptions for 99 yards and completing a 42-yard touchdown pass.
Much like the 2025 Giants, Skattebo and his 2024 ASU squad had relatively modest expectations for the season, with many experts designating the Sun Devils as one of the worst teams in the Big XII. Skattebo proved early in the season that those predictions were wrong, and he would go on to lead ASU to a completely unexpected Conference Championship and CFP Appearance.
Skattebo's and ASU's success relied on embracing the underdog role, something the Giants have struggled mightily with as of late. Skattebo's experience in college learning to take the identity of the underdog head-on is an attribute he can help the Giants fully embrace. The NFL is certainly not the Big XII. The mentality of the underdog and the hunger that accompanies that mentality are crucial aspects to the potential success of the 2025 Giants.
So far, so good for Skattebo as he has impressed in both training camp and preseason, most notably in the Giants' preseason game against Buffalo, where he contributed 102 total yards of offense, including seven receptions for 80 yards and adding 22 yards on the ground. The Giants will look to him for more production and an increased role as his versatility in the passing games pairs nicely with Russell Wilson's skill set.
While it's likely Tyrone TracyJr Jr. R will headline the Giants' backfield with Devin Singletary behind him, Skattebo can make his presence known by instilling that underdog mentality in a team desperate to right the ship.
If a completely overlooked ASU team can do it, why not the Giants?
