2025 NFL Preseason: Price is Right for Vikings Return Game

Myles Price was just another undrafted free agent a few weeks ago.

That changed after he started playing preseason games for the Minnesota Vikings. Price, a rookie out of Indiana, continues to live on the 53-man roster bubble as a part of the crowded WR room. But he’s set himself apart from his peers through his play at a critical position for the Vikings: kick and punt returner.

Price has to keep churning out results to beat out the other options, but here’s why his recent preseason play could earn him a roster spot and starting role.

Price Produced Preseason Highlights in Week 1 and 2

Through two weeks of preseason football, most people are gearing up for the NFL season, not talking about third and fourth stringers’ highlights. Price has managed to keep his name in people’s minds, though.

He’s produced big plays in both of the Vikings' preseason games so far. In Week 1, he was the recipient of a Max Brosmer touchdown pass to take the lead against the Texans. Brosmer, a rising undrafted free agent himself, threw a dart across the defense to a streaking Price that left his matchup in the dust. His quickness and connection with Brosmer led to his reward of claiming the only Vikings’ passing TD of the game.

Price showed in Week 1 that he might be a serviceable backup receiver, but he hasn’t been the top option out of camp. That title most likely belongs to Lucky Jackson, who generated plenty of training camp buzz coming into this season. Price’s 5’9” stature also doesn’t help his case for carving out a significant pass-catching role.

Where Price could really contribute, however, is to the Vikings' special teams return game. The Vikings seem to have no clear plan for who will be returning punts and kicks. They tried out Rondale Moore in Week 1, but he suffered a season-ending injury in his first punt return. In Week 2 against the Patriots, third-round rookie Tai Felton was the first to give it a go, but he coughed up a fumble on his first kick return.

That opened the door for Price to get his shot. He used that chance to create one of the few highlights in a game where the Vikings failed to score a TD. In the 4th quarter, Price ripped off an 81-yard kick return before being brought down inside the 10.

Price joked afterwards that he’s “gotta take that one to the crib.” Still, his kick return, along with a 21-yard punt return that impressed Head Coach Kevin O’Connell, may have vaulted him into a starting return game role, a position that was a question mark for the Vikings after Moore’s injury.

Price’s status as a starting returner isn’t confirmed, but it’s got on-field results to back it up. For a Vikings fan who can’t remember a good kick and punt returner since the days of Marcus Sherels and Cordarrelle Patterson, his flashes of talent are a breath of fresh air. They should also be enough to reserve him a roster spot playing what he says is “my favorite position in the world.”

Keep an eye out for #31 dicing special teams defenses. He might just take it to the crib next time.
