The Clock is Ticking: Will the Lions make a move before the Trade Deadline?

The Detroit Lions are currently positioned in a great spot near the top of the NFC, with an impressive 5-2 record. They’ve certainly proven themselves worthy with an offense ranked third in scoring and an unstoppable defense that hasn’t been flawless, but finds ways to make big stops when it matters most.

They don’t seem like a team that needs any major changes. However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t consider one.

Pass Rush Remains a Priority

This time last year, the Lions were scrambling to find a replacement after Detroit defensive edge Aidan Hutchinson’s devastating season-ending injury, and they never truly recovered. Now, Hutchinson is healthy and dominant, but this team is very aware of how quickly a roster can thin out. So far, Marcus Davenport’s injury has already tested the rotation. While Al-Quadin Muhammad has remained strong and steady, Detroit should want to get ahead of the problem rather than being forced to react to it later.

According to multiple reports, Miami Dolphins’ linebacker Jaelan Phillips is one of the biggest names rumored to be of interest to Detroit. Phillips can win one-on-one, and he could take the pressure off Hutchinson in passing. He would, however, likely come at a very high price.

Another rumored option is Anfernee Jennings of the New England Patriots. He’s reliable, physical, and he would fit perfectly in Detroit’s rotation.

Strengthening the Secondary

Lions cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed are expected to be back very soon, but Detroit’s secondary has been stretched thin for weeks. Adding another reliable corner could help them find balance as the season tightens.

Former Michigan standout and Cincinnati Bengals cornerback DJ Turner has been a logical option to consider in trade speculation. He would be an excellent fit, providing speed and coverage instincts, along with his local ties to the state.

Another name being mentioned by insiders includes New Orleans Saints’ cornerback Alontae Taylor. Seattle’s Riq Woolen has also been mentioned in several speculative discussions; however, his price and contract length make him much more of a long shot.

Learning From the Past

The Lions are very strong right now and don’t need to make any huge, dramatic moves to remain in the playoff conversation, but they know that they also can’t afford to repeat last year's mistakes. This front office has built up an incredibly strong and capable roster, yet the difference between a playoff team and a Super Bowl team oftentimes comes down to health, depth, and overall timing.

The clock is ticking, but this time, the Lions seem ready, and they’re determined to stay one step ahead of what's coming next. But if they truly want to separate themselves from the rest of the pack, one smart move before Tuesday’s deadline could make all the difference.
