Cowboys Active at Trade Deadline, Acquire DT Quinnen Williams and LB Logan Wilson
So… sitting at 3-5-1, the Dallas Cowboys made two moves in the 24 hours leading up to the trade deadline. Moving draft picks in rounds two and seven for the upcoming draft, and round one in the 2027 draft.
We actually may be saved for NEXT season. Let’s look into what Dallas gives up and gets back – but first, we need to revisit the Micah Parsons deal from the end of last offseason.
Dallas gave up their superstar EDGE Micah Parsons for Green Bay’s next two first-round draft selections, plus their star defensive tackle, Kenny Clark.
Then we started the season with a historically bad defense, which has led us to a (probably unrecoverable) 3-5-1 start. GM Jerry, before our Monday Night showdown vs. Arizona, told Stephen A. Smith that the team had made a trade that was being finalized and would be trying to make more before the deadline, and for once was actually telling the truth!
First, Bengals LB Logan Wilson was traded to the Cowboys for just a 7th-rounder in the 2026 draft. I love this trade because our linebackers have been HORRIBLE and we don’t really give up much – a 7th-round pick is usually a shot in the dark. Wilson requested a trade from Cincinnati after being benched, even though he has been their leading tackler for the last three seasons. Since he was benched, their defense dropped to below ours in a number of statistical categories, so he’s moving up!
Next, Dallas acquired Jets DT Quinnen Williams for next year’s second-round pick, Mazi Smith, and the more favorable first-rounder that we have in 2027 (we keep the later pick). We FINALLY get rid of Mazi Smith, who SUCKS and has been a healthy scratch in 4 games this season, including last night’s game vs. Arizona, and replace him with a bona fide top 5 guy at the position, for way less than I thought.
So Dallas turned Micah Parsons and two draft picks into two of the best DTs in the game, a startable LB, and a Green Bay first-rounder. Maybe Jerry was right after all.
Now, let’s be serious here. The Cowboys are still not going to be contenders this year, but the way they are rebuilding is SUPER interesting. With only five picks in 2026 and 5 in 2027, but prioritizing the higher picks, Dallas has a chance to make some serious splashes in the draft and maybe figure something out.
Matt Eberflus better figure out a new scheme if he’s going to finish out this season –now Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams, and Osa Odighizuwa are holding down the interior. Donovan Ezeiruaku is improving rapidly, learning from veteran DEs like Jadeveon Clowney and Dante Fowler. Our LB room is going to look good after the bye, with our heat-seeking-missile DeMarvion Overshown coming back from injury and the new addition Logan Wilson coming in to play with Marist Liufau. Kenneth Murray should be cut immediately. We should be blitz-heavy, using lots of 5-man defensive fronts (often called “bear fronts”) to generate pressure and take the load off our god-awful DB corps.
I have compiled a list for Jerry Jones for this offseason. It goes in order of priority.
-
Extend George Pickens—He is having a career year with the offensive guys you paid for and is making them better. You have to keep him around.
-
Fire Matt Eberflus—Eberflus is ruining our organization AGAIN! So get his ass out of town, please, for the sake of everyone buying tickets. AND DO NOT PROMOTE IN-HOUSE FROM THIS REGIME ON DEFENSE!
-
Extend Javonte Williams—Hats off to the front office for taking a chance on the kid. He’s doing great. We don’t have the draft capital to try another RB. Just sign him for a couple of years to keep him around.
-
Target a startable defensive back in free agency—We are paying way too much money for Diggs, Bland, Donovan Wilson, and Malik Hooker to dilly dally against everyone this year. Clean house and get someone who can play!
-
Draft aggressively for Offensive Tackles and DBs—With so few picks, we can’t afford to strike out. Find guys worthy of protecting Dak on day one! Start mortgaging the future if we have to, because most of our core is under contract through the 2027 season.
Jerry, I have to say, I might actually forgive you if you can handle this right. Go Cowboys!
