Dallas Cowboys New Offense – How will the new HC change things?

After the first preseason game, I still have many questions about how Brian Schottenheimer is planning this season.

With Joe Milton at the helm in the first half of preseason week 1, HC Brian Schottenheimer clearly couldn’t do all he’s been wanting to. Lots of screens, short passes, and runs were called – a very conservative approach that we’ve seen way too much of in the past two coaching regimes (McCarthy and Garrett).

Watching the game, you could tell that his hand was forced in not calling plays that he would if starters were in, but it’s got me very anxious that we basically have the same system in place. With this offseason’s offensive overhaul, the Cowboys can afford to be aggressive and play more excitingly with lots of deep passes on cool concepts and even upgraded run schemes.

Let’s face it – Schottenheimer is a young, offensive minded guy. He should be running the show in a similar fashion to how others do it: using analytics and creativity in his way of designing his playbook, and we just didn’t get a chance to see that yet. I think that upgrading the skill positions should be all the inspiration in the world to try and make that happen, but the way that the Jones family seeks out coaches is a very silly operation. Throughout this offseason, it’s been unusually quiet, and I’d love to see more out of the guy we are handing the keys to than I have so far.

Again, just preseason. The guys are warming up to the season, and Coach Schotty may be slow rolling his genius out there. Time will tell, but it’s got me feeling anxious as we approach the regular season.

The Cowboys are slated to take on the reigning Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia for the first game of the season. Against them, you’re going to need to play smart. If Schottenheimer doesn’t adapt his playcalling ahead of time, his time in Dallas could be short-lived.

Let’s hope for the best. Go Cowboys.
