Cowboys Fire DC Matt Eberflus After One Season

We may never recover from the horrendous defense we just watched all season, but it’s officially over.

Jerry Jones fired DC Matt Eberflus early in the morning on Tuesday, and now 2026 is off to a great start.

We are finished with the ridiculously high zone coverage rates. We are done with the low blitz rates. We SHOULD be done with Kenneth Murray – he was an Eberflus guy who was ALWAYS on the field.

The Cowboys’ defense, according to DVOA, was ranked the 4th WORST SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE STATISTIC, 1978, WITH A DVOA OF 22.5%. For context, DVOA is a stat that measures how much better or worse a defense is than league average. The Cowboys were 22.5% worse than league average.

Where do we go from here?

Well, the Falcons fired their head coach, Raheem Morris, who has served as a defensive coordinator for many teams. He was the Defensive coordinator for the Rams in their 2021 Super Bowl run. He wasn’t a great head coach, but he will do fine as a coordinator. He deserves an interview.

A home run would be Brian Flores, who coached the Dolphins before a weird situation and alleged blackballing by the league, and then returned to the Steelers as a Linebackers Coach in 2022. He’s been the defensive coordinator for the Vikings since 2023 and has consistently given them solid defenses.

In addition, the Seahawks’ defense is one of the best in the league, so anyone from that staff would be cool with me.

The big thing is, we at least got the worst DC in football out the door. There is no downgrade. A 4th grader with an Xbox controller can call a better defense than what we dealt with for the last 18 weeks.

Sayonara, Matt! Ruin someone else’s franchise! Preferably in the division!
