Panthers Win Nail-Biter and Sweep the Falcons 30-27 in Atlanta
In a dramatic, electrifying matchup, the Carolina Panthers escaped Atlanta with a 30-27 overtime victory over the Falcons, sweeping the NFC South rival for the first time since 2013.
Bryce Young delivered a career day for the Panthers: completing 31/45 passes for a franchise-record 448 yards with three touchdowns, despite playing through an ankle issue, while putting on a much-needed performance for the Panther faithful that has been questioning his leadership.
The game looked bad for Carolina early. Atlanta jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead behind the strong efforts from Bijan Robinson, who carried the Atlanta offense with his 104 yards and two scores.
Yet, the Panthers refused to fold. They chipped away in the third quarter, with Young connecting on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Legette, cutting the deficit to 21-16, which shut the Mercedes-Benz Stadium into silence as Carolina marched back into this game.
With the Panthers trailing 24-27, Young found rookie Tetairoa McMillan for a 12-yard go-ahead score with just 1:08 remaining, followed by a successful two-point conversion by Jalen Coker. But the Falcons weren’t done. A clutch field goal by Zane Gonzalez with only 16 seconds on the clock forced the second overtime on this Sunday.
In overtime, the momentum belonged to Carolina. A massive 54-yard pass from Young to Tommy Trembleto set up kicker Ryan Fitzgerald’s 28-yard walk-off field goal.
This win means the Panthers are 6-5, gaining momentum and demonstrating they can win tight games under pressure. With this win on the road, it raises serious questions about Carolina’s ability to sustain playoff contention as the season slowly approaches its end.
This win isn’t just a morale boost for Carolina; it may mark a turning point. They showed resiliency, Young’s arm strength, and a late-game mindset that has been missing for a long time. If they build on it, this team could surprise the NFL down the stretch.
