Chargers Have an Electrifying Start to the Season
For the first time since 2002, the Los Angeles Chargers have started the season 3-0. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked the Chargers seventh in their Week 4 Power Rankings, giving them a 90% chance of making the playoffs.
Los Angeles has set themselves up well for the rest of the season, despite being in one of PFF’s strongest divisions in the NFL. All of their games this season have been against AFC East opponents, which has put them firmly at the top of their division.
Many attribute the Chargers’ success to their coaching staff. In his second year in Los Angeles, head coach Jim Harbaugh brought a winning culture back to the team. Even with low expectations from around the NFL, he led Los Angeles to the postseason in 2024.
“We only know the most authentic competitor who cares so much about the team, about winning, about football,” said quarterback Justin Herbert on “The Herd.” “He’d do anything for us.”
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter also joined the Chargers last offseason. Last season, the Chargers' defense allowed only 31 offensive touchdowns, the fewest in the NFL, according to Fox Sports. In 2025, Minter continued to put his players in ideal situations, creating one of the best defenses in the league. One player who has benefited from Minter at the helm is safety Derwin James.

After his Week 3 performance against the Denver Broncos, James was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week. He had 12 tackles, including four tackles for a loss and a sack. His success in Minter’s system has helped propel the Chargers to become one of the best teams in the AFC.
On the other side of the ball, Herbert has been having one of his best seasons in the NFL. With a Pro Bowl selection under his belt, Herbert has set the bar high. However, this season, he leads the NFL with 860 passing yards, according to Pro Football Reference. His ability to make tight-window throws has proven to be his secret weapon, especially against the talented Denver defense. One of those throws was the game-tying touchdown pass.
The Chargers’ Week 4 matchup will be against the winless New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. Los Angeles is a 6-point favorite in this week’s game, and many believe they will continue their electrifying win streak.
