Can Evan Engram Still Emerge as Sean Payton's “Joker”?

Coming into the season, Broncos Country was buzzing with excitement for newly signed tight end Evan Engram as he was slotted to fill in at Sean Payton’s “joker” role on offense. Engram led all tight ends in both receptions (112) and yards (957) from the slot over the last two seasons, and under Sean Payton, Broncos tight ends have run 52.3% of their routes from the slot, the 5th-highest rate in the NFL (per Next Gen Stats). This made Engram seem like a perfect fit to be Payton’s “joker”. This role requires someone who can be utilized in various positions and formations, where their presence creates favorable matchups against unsuspecting defenders. Naturally, Broncos Country was foaming at the mouth to see Payton’s vision for Engram put into action. Unfortunately, through two weeks of the NFL season, Engram has essentially been a no-show, totalling only four catches for 33 yards (per ESPN) and only appearing on the field for 38.06% of the offensive snaps (per Pro Football Reference).

With his availability for Denver’s Week 3 game against the Chargers in question, will Engram ever become the impact player this Broncos offense needs?

One of the biggest concerns that came along with signing Engram was indeed his injury history. In his 9-year career, he has only played a complete season three times (per ESPN). In the 2023 season, Engram was able to maintain his health for the entire 17-game schedule as he led the league in receptions amongst all tight ends (per Statmuse). The Broncos were hoping that Sean Payton’s scheme would be able to utilize his speed and athleticism, especially out of the slot, and revive prime Evan Engram. Still, thus far in Engram’s Broncos tenure, injuries continue to linger and limit his opportunities to contribute.

The silver lining is that despite being banged up, Engram has practiced, suited up, and played in the Broncos' first two games. Payton may be playing the long game and carefully ramping Engram up as he works towards full health. If Engram can get close to 100%, he could become the key to unlocking this offense and elevating the Broncos' passing game. From tight end, the slot, and maybe even the backfield, I think Sean Payton has some tricks up his sleeve ready to be dialed up for Engram’s breakout game in his ‘joker” role.
