Joe Burrow Nears Comeback as Bengals Face Rival Steelers in a Must-Win AFC North Matchup
After a brutal 47-42 loss to the Bears before the bye, the Cincinnati Bengals head into Week 11 with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Currently sitting at 3-6, they head to Pittsburgh to face the 5-4 Steelers in what feels like a must-win for both sides.
Despite the nerves surrounding this week, recent news in Cincinnati has shifted the spotlight to Joe Burrow’s recovery timeline and potential return. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Bengals opened Burrow’s 21-day return window from injured reserve, meaning his comeback could be on the horizon. While Joe Flacco will start again this week, Burrow’s presence at practice gives the Bengals some much-needed optimism heading into this high-stakes divisional game.
The Stakes
The Bengals beat the Steelers 33-31 in Week 7, but both teams have changed since then. Pittsburgh is fighting to remain on top of the North, while the Bengals are fighting for pride and possibly their season.
According to Pro Football Reference, Cincinnati’s defense ranks in the bottom five in yards per play allowed over the last month, and PFF gives them one of the lowest tackling grades in the league. It’s no secret that this team’s defensive struggles have plagued it, and unless major adjustments are made, the Pittsburgh ground game will likely take advantage.
On the offensive side, the Bengals have at least been entertaining. Over their past three games, they’ve averaged 37.6 points per game, and Ja’Marr Chase has been a true bright spot on the field. He ranks in the top five in yards after catch, and he had a historical performance against the Steelers in their first meeting, for 161 yards on 16 receptions. Expect him to be heavily targeted again, especially with the season on the line.
Key Matchups
Ja’Marr Chase vs. Steelers Secondary
Chase dominated Pittsburgh earlier this season and put on quite a show. This time around, things might not come as easily. Joey Porter Jr. has proven to be a promising young corner, and Jalen Ramsey adds experience and physicality on the back end. Ja’Marr Chase may have won the first battle, but you can bet the Steelers have adjusted. Expect plenty of double coverage, forcing Flacco to look towards Tee Higgins and Andrei Iosivas for production.
Steelers Pass Rush vs. Bengals Offensive Line
Cincinnati’s offensive line has allowed 19 sacks in its last eight games, according to StatMuse. With TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith coming off the edge, protection will be key. The Steelers rank towards the top of the league in total pressures per ESPN, and if the Bengals can’t keep Flacco upright, it could be a long afternoon.
Prediction
The Bengals have been their own worst enemy, blowing back-to-back double-digit leads before the bye. Still, their offense remains capable and strong, as they’ve scored 33, 38, and 42 points in their last three matchups. This team must prove it can finish, something that’s been missing in every recent loss.
The Steelers are tough to beat, especially at home, and they rarely lose two straight under Mike Tomlin. Still, expect another shootout, because that’s the only way the Bengals seem to know how to play right now.
I’ll continue to think for the time being, wishfully.
